Special Education & Related Services

Special Education is “specially designed instruction, at no cost to the parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability.” This includes instruction provided in the home and other settings, as well as instruction in physical education. Special education does not mean a particular place like a special ed classroom, but means the child is being offered services, in or out of the regular classroom.  

Related Services are intended to help a child function in the educational setting. The child needs the services to go to school. They include transportation, developmental, corrective, and other supportive services. One or more of the following could be provided:

  1. Speech-language pathology and audiology;
  2. Interpreting services;
  3. Psychological services;
  4. Physical and occupational therapy;
  5. Recreation, including therapeutic recreation;
  6. Social work services;
  7. School nurse services in some cases;
  8. Counseling services;
  9. Assistive technology devices; or
  10. Medical services for diagnosis and evaluation.
