AspenPointe — A Therapeutic Approach to Providing the Best for Your Child with Disabilities

AspenPointe supports families of children with disabilities in many ways and across a broad geographical area. It began in 1875 as the Colorado Springs Relief Society, delivering food, coal and clothes to the sick and needy. Today it has a whole-life, whole-family and whole-wellness approach, and its mission statement is, “Empowering clients. Enriching Lives. Embracing Purpose.” AspenPointe’s focus is mental health services, but through these services, therapists have many natural encounters with children with disabilities.

AspenPointe's Child and Family Services program accepts as patients children from birth to 18 years old. AspenPointe also has a number of locations that serve El Paso and Teller Counties. Please visit the AspenPointe website for a full listing of their locations. If the programs are combined, they can equal support throughout a person’s lifetime.

AspenPointe works with families on practical issues as well. Se habla espanol también. Also, AspenPointe will see clients regardless of ability to pay and will accept a wide variety of funding.

Beginning with AspenPointe

The process begins with the intake appointment. When a family is concerned for a child’s developmental needs and calls AspenPointe for help and advice, an intake appointment will be scheduled. During the intake appointment, the family will meet with a highly skilled and trained mental health provider. At the end of the first session, the provider may make a diagnosis of a mental health disorder. He or she may also refer the patient to another specialized professional in the community, if that is a better fit. If community specialty care isn't available right away, AspenPointe staff will work with that family to ensure support is provided until more suitable care is available.

Therapy and Specialized Care

In most cases, various forms of play therapy are used in the sessions with children, and some skills are also taught to the families. AspenPointe providers feel that it is imperative to continue using these tools at home, as the child may only be seen in the clinic once or twice a week. That is simply not enough for the child to receive the full benefit of the therapy. When possible, families are included in therapy using Filial Therapy, a type of play therapy that teaches the parent to be the play therapist.

AspenPointe offers a wide variety of mental health needs for children and teens through specialized therapies that range from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to traditional psychotherapy for adolescents and teens. It also offers Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Biofeedback and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

Whole Family Approach

To fully support the family and the whole person, AspenPointe also has programs that provide in-home therapy and case management services. This ensures the family is connected to the most appropriate services and coordinates those services for the family.

Walk-in Center for Wellbeing

Additionally, the Center for Wellbeing offers an innovative approach to how patients are seen, as no appointment is necessary. The walk-in appointment only takes 30 minutes to connect your family to the best supports that AspenPointe can offer you. The Center for Wellbeing “incorporates five core areas of wellbeing (Health and Wellness, Career, Social, Community and Financial) to promote healthy living.”

AspenPointe is proud to have a highly-trained team of people to support the whole family. If you believe your child with disabilities might have mental health issues, seeking a good diagnosis and treatment will be in the best interests of your child.
